What is bowling?

A recreational and target sport, bowling involves rolling a ball toward pins (in pin bowling) or another target (in target bowling). In the United Kingdom and Commonwealth countries, “bowling” may refer to target bowling, such as lawn bowls. However, pin bowling (most commonly ten-pin) is the most common type.

What is pin bowling?

The objective of pin bowling is to knock over pins on a lane, a long playing surface. Protective lubricating oil is applied to a surface made of wood or synthetic material on lane surfaces in various oil patterns that affect ball motion. A strike is made when all the pins fall on the first roll, and a spare is made when all the pins fall on the second roll. Pin bowling can be found in ten-pin, candlepin, duckpin, nine-pin, and five-pin formats. Pin bowling is a forerunner of the ancient game of skittles.

What is target bowling?

Target bowling aims to get the ball as close to a mark as possible. The surface can be grass, gravel, or something else in target bowling. There may be indoor and outdoor versions of pétanque, boules, lawn bowls, bocce, carpet bowls, and pétanque. Bowls are also related to curling.

One hundred twenty million people, including 70 million in the United States, play bowling in over 90 countries.

Description of different equipment

Ball

The type of bowling determines the variety of balls used. Ten-pin balls typically have three holes, a diameter of about 8.59 inches (21.8 cm), and a weight of 6 to 16 pounds (2.7 to 7.3 kilograms). To accommodate smaller hands, the size and spacing of the finger holes on non-customized balls are typically smaller on lighter balls. The shape of the balls’ cores (pictured) makes it possible to fine-tune the desired ball paths, and modern resin covers (surfaces) that have been available since the early 1990s increase a ball’s hook (curve) potential. In contrast, straighter shots can be made with conventional plastic balls. There are no holes in the duckpin and candlepin balls, so they fit in the palm of your hand.

Pins

In variations of pin bowling, the bowling ball targets bowling pins. Pins vary in size and shape but are typically cylindrical and widen when the ball strikes them. The ten-pin bowling pin is the largest and heaviest, weighing 1.5 kilograms (3 pounds, 6 ounces). Candlepins are the tallest at 15+34 in (40 cm), but they are only 2+1516 in (7.5 cm) wide and weigh 2 lb 8 oz (1.1 kg).

Pin wood

Blocks of rock maple wood are glued into shape to make bowling pins, then turned on a lathe. The pin is painted, coated with a plastic material, and given a glossy finish after the lathe shapes it. Bowling pins can be made from approved synthetics because there isn’t enough suitable wood. Synthetic pins are currently permitted for play in five-pin, duckpin, and candlepin. Synthetic pins usually sound different when hit by the ball than wooden pins.
